Unlike virtually all other prenatals, EverNatal doesn't contain any iron. And this was done very purposefully (we made IronBiotic as a separate supplement). And here's why we have gone against the grain by excluding iron from our formulation...
- Iron should be taken individually, as it's own separate supplement. The reason is that it doesn't absorb well with zinc or calcium supplements, or caffeine. Leaving us to wonder if iron and zinc are in a capsule together, how much of that are we actually absorbing? If you are taking an iron supplement, here is our best tips to maximise absorption.
Why EverNatal Doesn't Contain Iron
1. Iron Should Be Taken Individually
✿ Iron does not absorb well when combined with zinc, calcium, or caffeine.
✿ When iron and zinc are in a capsule together, absorption is compromised.
✿ If you're taking an iron supplement, follow best practices for maximizing absorption.
2. Iron Should Be Taken Every Second Day
✿ If iron is included in a prenatal, it must be taken daily, which keeps hepcidin levels high.
✿ High hepcidin levels can interfere with optimal iron absorption.
✿ Read our blog on hepcidin [here].
3. Not Everyone Needs Extra Iron
✿ Some individuals have sufficient iron levels and do not require additional supplementation.
✿ Extra, unneeded iron can circulate in the body as oxidative stress.
✿ Those who may not need extra iron include:
✿ Individuals with excellent iron status.
✿ Those who have recently had an iron infusion.
✿ People with haemochromatosis.
4. Iron Can Cause Constipation
✿ Some individuals are sensitive to iron and may experience constipation.
✿ Taking iron daily increases the risk of persistent constipation.
✿ If iron is included in a prenatal, it could lead to daily digestive discomfort.
This is why we formulated IronBiotic as a separate supplement—to ensure iron is taken correctly and effectively without interfering with other essential nutrients.
