Gentle on the stomach

Its chelated structure ensures that it is gentle on the stomach. Studies have shown that individuals taking iron bisglycinate experience fewer side effects compared to those taking other forms of iron.

Unique chemical structure

The superior absorption of iron bisglycinate can be attributed to its unique chemical structure. Unlike other forms of iron, bisglycinate is chelated, meaning the iron is bound to an amino acid (glycine). This chelation allows it to pass through the stomach and reach the small intestine without interacting negatively with other components of the diet.

Superior absorption

A study published in the 'Journal of Trace Elements in Medicine and Biology' found that iron bisglycinate was more easily absorbed than other commonly used forms of iron, such as ferrous sulfate and ferrous fumarate. This higher absorption rate means that more iron enters the bloodstream where it can be used by the body, ensuring optimal benefits.

Compared with ferrous sulphate

Often prescribed due to its high elemental iron content, ferrous sulfate, unfortunately, has poor solubility in the upper intestine, leading to low absorption and common gastrointestinal side effects.

Compared to ferrous fumarate

Although it is more soluble than ferrous sulfate, it still lags behind in absorption when compared to iron bisglycinate and can lead to gastrointestinal side effects.

Backed with a meta-analysis

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials was conducted in 2023 to evaluate the effects of iron bisglycinate supplementation compared with other iron supplements on hemoglobin and ferritin concentrations. The finding was: compared with other iron supplements, supplementation with iron bisglycinate for 4-20 weeks resulted in higher hemoglobin concentrations in pregnant women and fewer reported GI adverse events. A trend for higher ferritin concentrations in pregnant women supplemented with iron bisglycinate was also found.
